英語論文・レポートの文章で引用をするときに、quotation markとblock quotationの使い分けがstyle guideによって異なるので、ややこしいな
主な英語論文のstyle guideではどう定義しているんだろう

今日は英語論文・レポートを書く際のstyle guideごとのquotation markとblock quotationの使い分けをご紹介します。
引用の基本 quotation markとblock quotationとは
引用の方法にはDirect Quotations（直接引用）とIndirect Quotations（間接引用）の2種類があります。
直接引用は特に著書の言葉遣いを重要視したい時に原文をそのまま使用すること、
間接引用は原文をSummarizing（サマライジング・要約）したり、Paraphrasing（パラフレーズ・パラフレージング・言い換え・書き換え）したりして、原文を直接使用しない方法です。
Direct Quotations（直接引用）を使用する場合、引用の長さ*により、二つの表現方法があります。
*style guideにより、定義が異なります。後のセクションで詳しく説明します。
直接引用 – 短文 : quotation markを使用
quotation mark(クオーテーションマーク）、つまり ” ” や ‘ ‘の記号を使用します。
直接引用 – 長文 : block quotationを使用
長文の場合、前後をuotation mark(クオーテーションマーク）、つまり ” ” や ‘ ‘の記号では括らず、
引用部全体のインデントを下げて左側のマージンを広くとるスタイル*を使用します。
*書式はstyle guideによって異なります。後のセクションで詳しくご紹介します。
block quotationとは、例えば下図の青枠で囲ってあるところです。（例はAPA style）

style guideごとの短文(quotation mark使用)と長文(block quotation使用)の使い分けの定義
短文(quotation mark使用)と長文(block quotation使用)の使い分けはstyle guideごとに異なっています。ご自身の書く論文・レポートで指定されたstyle guideにより、適切に使い分けをしてください。

style guideごとのblock quotationのフォーマット
style guideごとにblock quotationのフォーマットも異なっています。
特に、APA, MLA, Chicagoを比較すると、行間の取り方とblock quotationの前後のスペースの置き方が違います。
| APA, MLA | Start a block quotation on a new line （block quotationは新しい行から始める） indent the whole block 0.5 inch from the left margin（block quotationはどの行も通常より0.5インチ左側を開けるようにインデントする） Double-space the entire block quotation（block quotationは行間2行に設定する） Do not add extra space before or after it（block quotationの前後はスペースを開けない） Do not add a period after the closing parenthesis（block quotationの最後に引用元を記載するため()を書くが、この()の後にはピリオドは不要） |
